The Nissan LEAF is a top contender in the electric vehicle market, ranking #2 in its class—an impressive feat given the competition. The LEAF already offers many desirable features, but recent enhancements have made it even more popular and competitive.
Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger
One of the latest innovations introduced to the LEAF is the Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger. This cutting-edge charger not only allows the LEAF to draw power from the grid but also return energy to it. With this capability, the LEAF becomes the first electric vehicle in the U.S. able to send electricity back to the grid in addition to charging from it.
This charger offers several appealing benefits. It can store energy for later use or reduce costs by sending surplus electricity back to the grid when it’s not needed. The charger meets rigorous safety standards, having passed both UL and CHAdeMO certifications, as well as Nissan’s own tests, making it fully approved for use with the LEAF.
The V2X Platform
Alongside the Fermata bidirectional charger, Nissan has integrated the V2X platform with the LEAF. This smart software platform works with the Fermata charger to boost the LEAF’s power output by up to 33%. In addition to meeting industry standards, the platform’s optimized design reduces manufacturing costs, ultimately benefiting consumers with lower prices. This technology is available at Nissan dealerships and for fleet customers, and it does not affect the LEAF’s warranty. It may also be compatible with some LEAF models as early as 2013, depending on the state.
