Car Oil Types

Car owners may sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the car care products available. After all, how do you know what your car needs versus a product that a manufacturer is trying to get you to buy? One of the most popular categories of car maintenance components is engine oil or motor oil. Engine oil is essential for your car's optimal performance and overall health. Engine oil comes in four varieties: synthetic, conventional, high mileage, and synthetic blend. Each type of oil has its own properties and value. The type of oil that you can get for your car also varies in cost.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oil is one of the most commonly used oils out of all cars on the road today. Synthetic oil is actually made out of many different compounds and chemicals. It contains detergents, preservatives, and products called additives, which enhance the oil's specific characteristics to make your vehicle last longer and perform better. Additives include anti-wear agents, which protect vulnerable parts of the engine from damage with exposure to higher temperatures, and they also reduce the likelihood of deposits forming in the oil.

Synthetic Blend Oil

A synthetic blend oil can also be a good choice for your car's longevity and performance. Synthetic blend oils are made out of synthetic oil and conventional oil, which is another one of the most popular types of engine oil used on the road today. Conventional oil is often used in older cars with lower mileage. Conventional oils can also be used on a variety of vehicles, although they are most commonly added to protect the engine of light-duty trucks.

Conventional Oil

On its own, conventional oil is ideal for older vehicles that do not have complex engines and mechanical designs. Conventional oil helps a car shift gears more smoothly, and it is a good choice if you want solid and predictable acceleration and performance. Since conventional oil is less expensive than other types of oil, it is often used by drivers for life.

High Mileage Oil

When your car hits the important 75,000-mile mark, it may be time to switch over to a different oil. A car with high mileage will do well using a high mileage oil that has specific properties for the engine of an older car. A high mileage oil has an extra layer of lubrication that keeps the engine components from getting too hot, which leads to better safety and performance.
