Did you happen to notice anything that seemed a bit off about the picture above? It's a familiar scene, similar to one you'd see every day in your car, but there is a big difference. The rearview mirror above was debuted by Nissan at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) and it's designed to cut out the view inside of your car, so no headrests, pillars or backseat passengers will diminish your rearward visibility.

This feature, which is called the Smart Rearview Mirror, was created in response to input received from Nissan's customers. It uses a rear-mounted camera system and is capable of streaming live video footage through an industry-first rearview mirror with a built-in LCD monitor. Drivers can turn the camera view on or off with a switch, and there's no need to worry that the camera will lack clarity at night or in inclement weather conditions, as Nissan states that no matter the climate or time of day, the system is designed to provide an optimal view.

In regard to the new technology, Anthony Baehner of Nissan Product Planning states, "It helps to provide a clear view of what is behind the vehicle, removing obstructions that may otherwise interfere such as headrests, other occupants in the vehicle, and maybe a cargo area filled up with stuff."

Nissan is currently exploring opportunities to bring the new technology to market and we think it's something customers at Peoria Nissan would appreciate and find useful in their everyday travels. It would also be a great addition to the brand's already extensive suite of high-tech safety equipment, which includes features like lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, forward-collision warning and an Around View camera system.
